LET ME CALL YOU SWEETHEART

.... Bernardine was given this bracelet by her boyfriend Joe  on her 18th birthday, April 16,1938.
Joe was almost 20 and getting ready to join the Army. Bern wore the bracelet until she was told
that her love had been killed in the South Pacific in the early 1942.....Then, Berna wrapped the bracelet in a silk handekerchief and tucked it away in the cedar chest where it remained until her step-daughter found it a few years ago. She had never heard her mother or father mention Joe but she knew of an Uncle Joe who went to war and never returned : Could they have been one and the same ? Heart top reads , "Bernardine , from Joe, 4-16.1938" 


Most sweetheart bracelets range in age from the turn of the century through the 50''s with encreased popularity during the war times,
This bracelet was made during  WW2 when sterling was the base metal for bracelets as other metals and alloys were used for the war effort.
Popular jewelry manufacturing companies recognized the need to produce items to serve as token of affection between a man and  woman, two woman friend, or to symbolize the loving relationship between mother and daughter. The "Sweetheart Bracelet" were swamped with the
business.
Each subject carried  it's own secret meaning that was shared between  the gift  giver and the recipient. The clover symbolized luck, hearts represented love, and birds stood for courtship.
This lovely bracelet is stamped American Queen Pitman&Keeler. Carmen sweetheart braclet has a locked top, so you can enclose a photo( as I did) , still has the original paper liner and celluloid

cover. The heart centerpiece is adorned with initials (like this one) , or  with twin hearts. If you want  to buy .....be carefuf ...wrists were smaller and  most of these  bracelets  while they will expande quite large , look best on a small wrist.

....Bernardine ha ricevuto questo braccialetto dal suo ragazzo Joe per i suoi 18 anni, il 16 aprile del  1938, Joe aveva quasi 20 anni ed era pronto a raggiungere l'Esercito. Betty ha portato questo braccialetto finchè non ha saputo che il suo amato era morto nel South Pacific nel 1942.


Gli Sweetheart   si collocano in un periodo  fra l'inizio del secolo fino agli anni 50, con una accresciuta popolarità durante i tempi di guerra.
Questi bracciali  fatti durante la WW2 , con metalli poveri in quanto altre leghe e metalli erano 
utilizzati per la guerra.  In particolare tutti i bracciali "sweetheart " sono in princisbecco.
Molti gioielleri  hanno iniziato a produrre  questo  prodotto  che simbolizza  l'affetto tra uomo e donna ,  o fra due amiche, o il legame  d'amore tra mamma e figlia.Così gli "Sweetheart "sono diventati un business.
Ogni  bracciale ha un suo significato che è un segreto condiviso tra chi dona e chi riceve : il quadrifoglio  portafortuna, il cuore  ..l'amore , ..gli uccellini il corteggiamento,  la luna crescente 
...la luna di miele.

Gli Carmen sweetheart  hanno un medaglione centrale che si apre , dove si può inserire una foto (io l'ho già fatto), ed ha ancora la sua protezione di celluloide.
Sul medaglione sono normalmente incise le iniziali degli innamorati o dei disegni con cuori che si intrecciano.
Se vi piacciono ed avete intenzione di farvi ( o meglio farvi fare ) un regalo ....state  MOLTO  attente( soprattutto se acquistate on line ): una volta le signore avevano i polsi MOLTO piccoli ,e si trovano bracciali  per i polsi di bambine .....  anche se sono elastici bisogna porre attenzione 
poichè è  brutto vederlo indossato con l'elastico tutto esteso.
